Netflix announced that an episode in the upcoming season of Black Mirror will employ choose-your-own adventure storytelling. It’s one of the first big examples of internet-native television, in that it involves technology and techniques that are specific to the internet (versus network television).
It’s a few degrees removed from Arcade Fire’s music videos that responded to viewers’ cameras with graphics — “Reflektor” and “The Wilderness Downtown” — and doesn’t seem so crazy to imagine that one day, the plot of a movie or TV show might somehow be guided by what you’re doing while watching — an AI that reads and reacts to facial expressions or biometric readings to inform what happens next.
